A short rant that is somewhat redundant...

Language warning:

I feel like Facebook is a bullshit magnet. It's a place where people can talk and be "friends," yet there is no genuine physical connection, no face-to-face honesty, and you can advance or retreat with just a mouse click. Over the past 6 months or so, I've really started to become a strong supporter of honesty and a strong opponent of bullshit. This is in large part due to what I see all across my Facebook friends' profiles and in certain relationships in my life. On Facebook, people can say whatever the hell the want, regardless of whether or not they mean it. One girl can tell another girl that she looks beautiful, though in reality the first girl doesn't actually believe that the second girl looks beautiful. One person can share a prayer request or something and another can comment or w/e and say that they'll pray, not really intending to actually pray. One person can tell another "I love you" when there is not a trace of genuine love in that person's heart.
Now, I don't say this to point fingers at specific people or even to try and work some pharisaical angle. I'm guilty of all this stupid shit just as much as anyone else, maybe even more since I've used Facebook to take the easy way out in multiple scenarios in the past couple years. However, the figurative blood on my hands doesn't change the shade of crimson that is on everyone else's. All this reminds me of my favorite scene in (500) Days of Summer, which I recently bought at Target for $6. In the scene, greeting card writer Tom, the main guy who is at the time cynical and frustrated because adorable Zooey Deschanel pretty much screwed him over. In response to someone's idea about cat cards of inspiration, Tom goes on a minor rant. I'll highlight my favorite parts and underline the section relevant to this post.

"Well this is, and Rhoda, no disrespect, but um, this is total shit. Go for it? You can do it? That's not inspirational, that's suicidal! If pickles goes for it right there that's a dead cat. This is lies. We are liars. Think about it. Why do people buy cards? It's not because they want to say how they feel. People buy cards because they can't say how they feel or are afraid to. We provide the service that lets them off the hook. You know what? I say to hell with it. Lets level with America or at least let them speak for themselves, right? I mean look, look. What is this, what does this say? "Congratulations on your new baby." How bout "congratulations on your new baby, guess that's it for hanging out, nice knowing ya." How bout this one? With all the pretty hearts on the front, I think I know where this ones going. Yup "Happy Valentines Day sweetheart, I love you." Isn't that sweet? Ain't love grand? This is exactly what I'm talking about. What does that even mean, love? Do you know? Do you? Anybody? If somebody gave me this card, Mr. Vance, I'd eat it. It's these cards, and the movies and the pop songs, they're to blame for all the lies and the heartache, everything. We're responsible. I'm responsible. I think we do a bad thing here. People should be able to say how they feel, how they really feel, not ya know, some words that some stranger put in their mouth. Words like love, that don't mean anything. Sorry, I'm sorry, I um, I quit. There's enough bullshit in the world without my help."

It's late and half of this post was written like 5 hours ago, so I've lost much of my initial train of thought and I think I will end it here.

Earache

So just last week I was driving down the road and thinking about how I hadn't really gotten sick in a long time and hadn't had an earache in a long time. Well, Monday morning I woke up with my sinuses dried out and my throat feeling...uncomfortable to say the least. Then as I watched the Monday Night Football game with friends on Monday night, my head started to feel congested and clogged. Then I spent about an hour or so this morning (3-4am) with a massive earache. Only after some tylenol and a heating pad was I able to dull the pain enough to get to sleep. It sucked. And so far I've had a dull ache and a feeling of massive congestion in my left ear.
All this, plus it looks like West Virginia is gonna lose to NC State in the Champs Sports Bowl game. Ugh.

The modern leper

I didn't expect to write a blog post tonight since I wrote a bunch in the past couple days, but a situation in my life has kinda reignited and I feel like posting some lyrics of a song that seems very relevant. Basically, I have a friend who worships a guy who has lied to her over and over and over and has hurt her multiple times and she claims she loves him. So, what would be more appropriate than a song about masochism? It's a song about emptiness and wasting away, at least that's how I interpret it.

The Modern Leper by Frightened Rabbit

A cripple walks amongst you
All you tired human beings
He's got all the things a cripple has not
Working arms and legs
And vital parts fall from his system
And dissolve in Scottish rain
Vitally he doesn't miss them
He's too fucked up to care
Well, is that you in front of me?
Coming back for even more of exactly the same
You must be a masochist to love a modern leper
On his last leg
On his last leg
Well, I crippled your heart a hundred times
And still can't work out why
You see, I've got this disease I can't shake
And I'm just rattling through life
Well, this is how we do things now
Yeah, this is how the modern stay scared
So I cut out all the good stuff
Yeah, I cut off my foot to spite my leg
Well, is that you in front of me?
Coming back for even more of exactly the same
You must be a masochist to love a modern leper
On his last leg
Well, I am ill
But I'm not dead
And I don't know which of those I prefer
Because that limb which I have lost
Well, it was the only thing holding me up
Holding me up
Well, I'm lying on the ground now
Walking through the only door
Well, I have lost my eyesight
Like I said I would
But I still know
And that is you in front of me
And you are back for even more of exactly the same
Well, are you a masochist to love a modern leper
On his last leg
And you are not ill
And I'm not dead
Doesn't that make us the perfect pair?
Just you and me
We'll start again
And you can tell me all about what you did today
What you did today

It's A Wonderful Life

Three blog posts in one day? Wowzers.

It's A Wonderful Life is a great film. It's well-written, acted, directed, and just plain well-made. Not only that but it thoroughly paints the picture how high a man can rise and how far he can fall. George Bailey is honest, hard-working, and selfless, yet his life is difficult and through certain events, his future seems hopeless and suicide appears to be the only way out. I think this is a good representation of humanity. While few people are truly selfless and honest like George Bailey, we all go through difficult times and stare hopelessness in the eyes at some point in our lives. George's guardian angel Clarence shows him what life would be like had George never been born, which shows George the immense value of his life and the huge impact he's had on people. This film is very life-affirming and while I don't think it answers some of the deep questions of life correctly (friends are great but people are imperfect and can't save themselves let alone us), it certainly is a great film nonetheless.

"All I want is what I have coming to me, all I want is my fair share"

Language warning. I may or may not use some "cuss words" in this post. Read at your own risk

The above quotation, spoken by a certain Sally Brown (Charlie Brown's sister), hits on what I was thinking I'd write about tonight: the difference between "want" and "need." These two contrasting ideas have been on and off my mind the past couple months. Now, I'm finally going to try and flesh my thoughts out onto virtual paper.
People in our day & age really don't know the definition of "want" and "need." In our culture, many people apparently "need" a big screen tv or "need" a new car or even "need" an xbox360 or ps3. Our culture is full of complete and utter bullshit. I am guilty of all this foolish thinking myself. Us people think that if we just get this possession or this other possession that our lives will be better and more "happy," therefore we put those things in the category of need. However, that mentality is total bullshit. So often we value that which moths and rust destroy, even to the point of worship. When we make anything other than God into a god of our own, we begin to build our lives around those things and fall into a mentality of dependency and "need."
Now, on to want. We all want a hell of a lot of things in life. We want people to love us, we want material possessions, we want social status, we want power, and as my parents use to sing, we "want what we want when we want it." Now, I'm not saying that of all this stuff is bad. I think our desire to be loved by others is a natural desire. However, very often we turn that into a desire to be worshipped and then think we "need" to be loved.
This week I've been thinking about what I want for Christmas and honestly, there are a few things I'd like to get but there is not a single thing I need. Sure, it'd be cool if a bunch of unrealistic stuff happened with a relationship that's been plaguing me lately, but that's solely an 11:11 sort of desire, not a "need." I need oxygen, water, food, and warm. I need forgiveness for the horrible things I think and do. I don't need a Macbook Pro. I don't need a tv or movies or a Netflix account. I don't need any of this materialistic stuff that will ultimately fade.
Like all things in this cliche thing called life, I don't fully understand this whole want/need dichotomy but I know that there are few things we actually need and far too many things we want. We are creatures that are too easily satisfied with garbage and then once our moment, and it is a moment, of fixation passes, we look for something else to satisfy.
I'm really distracted since I'm watching It's A Wonderful Life, so I'm just gonna finish this post with a quote from CS Lewis...

"“If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it, that does not prove that the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing.”"

The obligatory Christmas post

This post will be in two parts. Part one I'm gonna write right now (2pm) while watching White Christmas with my mom, and part two should come tonight either when I'm watching Charlie Brown Christmas or It's A Wonderful Life.

Part one.
To quote Ben Folds, "Everybody knows it sucks to grow up, and everybody does..." While I'm choosing not to fight the growing process as Ben Folds claims to do, the sentiment remains the same. As I was driving to and from my brothers old and new apartments to move some of his stuff, I was thinking about how Christmas and all that comes along with it changes with age. When you're a kid, Christmas is all wonder and lights and surprise. You have trouble going to sleep on Christmas Eve because you know there will be presents under the tree in just a manner of hours. When you're a kid, your imagination and innocence are a huge part of Christmas. As you get older, things change as they do with every other part of life.
When you get older, your innocence and wide-eyed imagination begins to fade and Christmas begins to feel different. It becomes less about the presents and the surprises and the food and the sparkling cider and becomes more about the people you spend your time with, the relationships you build or strengthen, and the memories you forge. As I get older and begin thinking about future relationships and even marriage (down the road of course), I start to wish more for certain relationships to go the way I want and less for material possessions that will break, fade, or be forgotten. I find that life is just more enjoyable when you're spending it with someone, be it friends, family, or a significant other, memories are better made in plurality. This isn't to say that I don't enjoy alone time every now and then. There are plenty of times in my life when I enjoy solitude over being with other people, when I can think clearly or be a total idiot or do whatever I want. However, these moments go hand-in-hand with moments spent with others.
I'll be super honest for a moment here. I think the best way I could enjoy yearly Christmas traditions like watching A Charlie Brown Christmas would be to cuddle up on a couch with a girl I care about, bundle up with a blanket, turn the tree lights on and the room lights off, and enjoy the message of these Christmas classics. However, this probably won't be happening in the next couple years but I can live with that. I don't know who or even if I'll marry but I trust that God has control over life and if he wants me to find someone, it'll happen.
Anyway, this isn't so much about my hopeless romantic notions, it's about the change that comes with growing up. On Christmas Eve (at least for me), I try to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas and maybe something else like It's A Wonderful Life and then go and get some sleep. Life is usually busy and tiring, especially around this time of the year, so I don't usually have much trouble going to sleep on Christmas Eve. The main trouble I have is getting up early on Christmas morning, 'cause when I'm tired and enjoying my nice warm bed, the thought of getting up and going downstairs to open presents just isn't as motivating as it used to be. However, I'm sure I'll wake up to the smell of blueberry muffins and hot chocolate tomorrow morning, thanks to my awesome mom, and I'll wrap up in sweats and a blanket and go enjoy Christmas morning.
I think as we all grow up, we trade our innocence and childhood wonder for the bittersweetness that is relationships. This isn't to say that we've all lost all of our innocence, but a great deal of it disappears with every page turn of the calendar. I don't know if I would say it's a completely fair trade but that's probably because I'm a tad sullen (thank you thesaurus) about another year of being single. However, I've got plenty of good friends and God has blessed my life immensely, so being romantically alone kinda fades to the backseat.

Part two will probably come later, but before I publish this post, I'd just like to say that Bing Crosby got the uglier sister in White Christmas. Danny Kaye lucked out.

Yippee-ki-yay

The Die Hard movies are classic man movies. Thanks to a Christmas gift from my friend Connor, I've got #s 1 and 2 to add to my collection. I already had Live Free or Die Hard, so now all that remains is for me to get Die Hard With A Vengeance and I'll be set.

These movies are enjoyable because John McClane isn't some muscle-bound Rambo character. He's an everyday cop with family problems, a sharp wit, and some awful bad luck at times. While there are some unrealistic parts throughout the films (Car>helicopter? Really??), overall they are relatively believable. The movies are also just plain fun. The good guys beat the bad guys, McClane makes his usual sarcastic jokes, and at the end things tie up nicely.

I can't remember if it was Mike & Mike or some other ESPN Radio host who said that Die Hard is his favorite Christmas movie, but whoever it is has decent, albeit odd, taste in movies.

Continuation.

I think I have found continuation. Without going into specifics, I've got some clarity of mind and am able to see the disconnect in a relationship I was pursuing. After a couple weeks of some crazy emotions and hasty decisions, it's nice to have some peaceful clarity in this situation. The near-future may not be an emotional cakewalk but I think I should be able to move on.

"Though the wasted hours pile high as a mountain,
I have found continuation."

Bullhonky part deux

As with part one, I do want to begin with a warning that the rest of this post will have some "cuss words" throughout and if you are offended, hurt, or in any way worse off because of these words, I recommend you don't look at the rest of this post. I explain my stance on language in part one, so if you want to know more about why I say what I say on here, look at the opening of that post.

Pleasantries are bullshit. I don't totally mean "Hey, how are you" and "Nice to see you." I mean that extra step, like when one woman comments on another's fashion and says they love it when more than likely they don't. I mean when someone sees you in passing and you say hi to each other and that person says "How are you?" or some form of it and continues on without caring for a response. I understand people being busy and certain situations calling for an extra dash of politeness, but come on. I'm gonna go out on a limb and reference Fight Club. It feels like, at least to me, that more often than not, people are "just waiting for their turn to speak." This is bullshit that I see every day, both in situations I just observe and in situations I take part in. I realize how hypocritical I am but I admit to spewing out the same bullshit for which I criticize others.
As I've grown up, I've seen bullshit in almost every social situation I've come across. Be it pleasantries, fake smiles, fake interest, fake love, fake whatever, we are creatures of hypocrisy and bullshit. I am the biggest hypocrite I know because as I rant about all this stuff, I'm more than likely going to do much of it in upcoming social situations.
I can't emphasize enough how much I value honesty. There is a fine line between being honesty and being a douchebag. Being honest means telling someone they aren't gorgeous or that that shirt doesn't make them look handsome. Being a douchebag means being honest and then taking the extra step to criticize. Opinions are on thing, being an overly critical jackass is another. More often than not, I am an overly critical jackass. For the friends who know me, they know I am one of the first ones to complain about or criticize in a situation. I do this because I am a sinner and very often it makes me feel better about myself when I can knock someone else down a notch or two. Sometimes I'm critical or spiteful to drive a point but 90% of the time, it's just because I'm a douche.
That said, I wish people would be more honest with me. If someone has a problem with me, I kinda would rather they talk to me about it (without harping on it) then to just let frustration fester and grow into something worse. I can't tell you how annoying it is when someone tries to tell me something false when I know the truth, i.e. that I look good when at best I look okay or that they love me when they really only like me and certain aspects of me. I just wish people would try and limit all the bullshit they produce, myself included in that "people" group.

Someday I'd love to just snap and go on a Facebook spree of commenting on people's statuses, pictures, and posts by calling all of the bullshit I see. I can just look at my news feed and see multiple people (mainly high school girls) telling other people they love them so much and blah blah fucking blah.  It annoys me to no end when girls have tiny little debates about who loves the other more when the truth probably is that neither one actually loves the other. I'm not saying we should all say exactly what we're thinking all the time 'cause a lot of us are pretty messed up and mean, so honesty would do much more harm than good. However, I think we all ought to strive to genuinely love each other, both through being honest in order to help someone (and not tear down) and in sacrificing ourselves for people. By sacrificing ourselves, I don't necessarily mean as far as death. What I mean is taking time to listen to someone who is hurting or lonely or whatever even if you have an incredibly busy day or your body is making it's own definition of "tired." People think love is an emotion but I was reminded today by Dr. Akin, the president of Southeastern, that love is action. Love is putting someone else in front of you. Love is listening to that incredibly annoying person who you wouldn't even call your friend solely because they need an ear to listen to them. Love is going out of your way to do the right thing for someone else, even if it inconveniences you or even makes things worse for you. Love is, well, I don't really know what love amongst us fallen humans is. I mean, I know what it is but I don't really know how to love others.
This is how John explains love:
"By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers."- 1 John 3:16 (ESV)
"Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends." - John 15:13 (ESV)

I think Jesus is THE best example of love because he chose to become a man and leave the perfection of Heaven, he led disciples, he healed the sick and the poor, he loved and fellowshipped (not a word, I know) with the people that others looked down upon (namely tax collectors and whores), and he willingly carried his cross to die, enduring being mocked, beaten and torn apart, tortured with a jagged whip and a crown of thorns, and ultimately being pierced by nails and a spear and then suffocating on a cross. I watched the Passion of the Christ a week or two back and while I didn't really like the movie very much due to some strange additions, some of the intense scenes of Jesus' walk to die were very unyielding. To be able to conjure up a basic mental image idea of Jesus' back being torn up by a whip and nails being driven to his hands makes it all the more dumbfounding that he could willingly do all this simply for foolish, wicked men like those that killed him and like me. If I were in that position, I would have been clawing at people and fighting and doing my best to get the hell out of Dodge as the saying goes. Yet, Jesus didn't do that. As Scripture says, "He opened not his mouth." We see true love through Jesus because in that horrible moment, he chose to give sinful creation a chance at being redeemed over saving himself from physical pain and the unimaginable spiritual torment of taking the world's sin upon himself, a sinless being.

I know this has been a strange post since I've gone from bullshit in life to love to Scripture back to love then to Jesus, but this is kinda how my mind works. All this to say, the idea of love that I'm not really sure on is the idea of romantic love. Scripture doesn't really talk about that a whole lot and while I believe that it is still putting another before yourself, I'm not really sure how it all plays out in real life. I chalk some of this lack of understanding to my very minuscule amount of life experience. Maybe in 10 or 20 years I'll look back at this post and have a better grasp on life, love, and romance. Maybe then I'll even be less of a hypocrite and will produce less bullshit.

Someday

I'd like to write a revelational monologue for a movie. You know towards the end of a movie when the main character finally understands that it's his female best friend that he really loves, not the gorgeous popular girl and then he has that short little speech about love? Or maybe when the character goes on a rant about heartache or relationships or something, like in 500 Days of Summer? Yeah, I think I could write one of those. I don't think I'm the type of person to write a book or screenplay or anything, but I think I could write a pretty solid monologue that I at least would be able to relate to.

Love Alone

Yesterday, my Brit Lit professor played the class a song by Caedmon's Call that was about the Great Divorce, which we were discussing. The lyrics got me thinking about the band and how they (the lyrics) were really interesting. So earlier today I decided to check out some of their other songs and I found this song that I really like. It's called Love Alone and the lyrics are as follows

No one would love me
if they knew all the things I hide
My words fall to the floor
As tears drip through the telephone line

And the hands I’ve seen raised to the sky
Not waving but drowning all this time
I'll try to build an ark that they need
To float to you upon the crystal sea

Chorus:
Give me your hand to hold
'Cause I can't stand to love alone
And love alone is not enough to hold us up
We've got to touch your robe
So swing your robe down low
Swing your robe down low

The prince of despair's been beaten
But the loser still fights
Death's on a long leash
Stealing my friends to the night

And everyone cries for the innocent
You say to love the guilty too
And I'm surrounded by suffering and sickness
So I'm working tearing back the roof

Repeat Chorus

And the pain of the world is a burden
And it's my cross to bear
And I stumble under all the weight
I know you're Simon standing there
And I know you're standing there

Bullhonky

This post is going to be a rant on something that contains a word that many people will find offensive. I don't write this to be offensive or to portray myself in some light, so if "cuss words" are offensive or harmful to you, I encourage you to close this window and ignore this stupid blog. Over the past year or so my stance on language has changed and I lean towards the side that believes that words in and of themselves are not sinful. I think the heart behind them is sinful. I think that if someone says "forget you!," the anger in their heart is the exact same as if they said "f**k you!" I read a blog post a while back from the lead singer of a band called the Classic Crime where he talked about how cuss words are a matter of culture. In one culture, the f-word is taboo. In another, it is common language. In one culture, it is taboo to show any skin. In another, it's common to walk around naked.
All this to say, I am not saying that I support using cuss words. My personal conviction at this point is that I am okay with saying "f*ck" or something else when I am by myself or with people who will neither be hurt, offended, or worse off because of it. Now, I do try to control my tongue because I really don't want to offend someone or hurt my witness because I do claim to follow Jesus. The Bible says to "let no unwholesome talk come out from among you." I think this applies much more to how we as humans interact than it does to specific words that are taboo one day and common the next.

Anyway, this next section of my post is going to be scattered with cuss words, so if you are offended by them or anything at all, I encourage you to close this browser and do something else. If you feel I have offended you or something, please comment or something because it is not my intent to hurt or offend anyone. I merely want to express some thoughts I have on here.
On to the show...

Bullshit. It's a word that is heard a lot. We hear it in movies, music, and in various conversations. I'm not here to talk about the word itself. However, in the past couple months I've seen quite a bit of it around me. People try to bullshit other people. What I mean by bullshit as a verb is that they (we) try to sell something false to someone else. Be it an idea, a thought, a compliment, an image, a belief, or something else, I think we all bullshit each other quite often.
What set this whole rant up was that earlier tonight I saw a friend of mine's FB status where they had talked about an upcoming event they were apart of and someone commented saying they wouldn't make it but asked if my friend could record it and send a video of it, to which my friend said yes. Now, I don't know for sure whether my friend will or won't do that, but my first thought after reading that was "bullshit, you won't do that."
We really do bullshit each other a lot. Sometimes it's to hide pain or embarrassment to avoid burdening someone else, like when someone asks if we're okay and we respond with "I'm fine" or "Yeah, I'm good." Other times, we bullshit each other to try and be nice, like telling a friend they're good looking when in fact they're rather unappealing. However, most of the time our bullshit is less of the ends-justify-the-means kind and more of the how-can-I-benefit-from-this kind.
My kind of bullshit tends to be of the manipulative kind, for I am a very manipulative person. Usually when I'm bullshitting someone, I'm saying one thing or another that I don't believe or agree with in hopes that they will disagree or will somehow view me higher. I can't really think of any specific examples from my own life at the moment, not because I don't do it but because I do it quite often that it's hard to think of something specific.
Another kind of bullshit I see a lot is "love." Being friends with a lot of high schoolers, I hear a lot of "I love you"'s between friends, couples, and the ones who fall in between and on the opposite sides. Now, I don't mean to take a highly cynical position here but realistically, how many high school relationships actually last past school? How many friends remain friends after the tassels are turned and the steps towards the future are taken? To my knowledge, I can recall three female friends to whom I have said "I love you" to. None of these were meant romantically and honestly, they were rarely carried out through my actions. I told one friend that because she was a great help to me in high school when I struggled emotionally over unrequited interest in other girls. Actually, come to think of it, that's been the main component of most of my close friendships with females. How sad.
To continue, high schoolers don't know jack about love. I've been learning that myself for the past couple years and I've seen it very closely the whole time. I try to encourage younger friends of mine from saying "I love you" unless they really mean it because almost every time it used, it means more along the lines of "I like you because you please me and make me feel good" than it does "I genuinely care about you and your well-being more than I care about myself and my own." I'm not saying that high schoolers have never ever experienced love, nor am I saying that it is impossible for a genuinely loving relationship to happen in high school. However, based on what I've seen in my very limited years of living, "love" is usually a casual word that is thrown around like a fucking silly band.
Anyway, this rant on love is for another time. Back to bullshit. Humans are deceivers. I think it can be traced back to the fall of man when Satan deceived Eve into eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Ever since, men and women have spent much of their time weaving their own lies and falsities into their words and actions in order to better present themselves.
This is beginning to get a little too long (twss) and I'm starting to lose my focus on the direction of my rant. To try and wrap this up before I go to sleep, where I will probably kick the covers off and have to remake my bed in the morning, I will try and end on a little bit of hope. I can't really say that with age comes an understanding of love or a genuine desire for truthfulness because as I see in my own corrupt heart as well as throughout my peers and elders, it's really a mixed bag of who bullshits and who doesn't.  For me, I believe that I am only going to learn to not bullshit people when I begin to see myself as lesser than them and to stop trying to earn their approval. That comes down to the idea of the first shall be last and the last shall be first. How can you be last (and therefore first) if you spend your time trying to slither into first? "Man looks at the outward appearance but God looks at the heart." In the past couple weeks I've been trying to be more honest with people and even though I've habitually thrown in some bullshit here and there, I'm finding that honesty isn't as scary as some people portray it to be. I think that everyone needs to continually learn discernment and wisdom because without those, if you're honest, you're just saying everything that is on your mind without a levee to guard yourself or others. I'm having trouble explaining some of the things I'm thinking right now. However, I'll end with this. Not all love is ("love") superficial and self-seeking. Not all statements and portrayals are bullshit. The last thing I want to be taken out of this blog is a warped, cynical view of people and life. Yes, we are broken. We are not too far gone though, we are not beyond repair. By that I don't mean some sort of hippie crap about how if we all just work together, we'll make the world right. THAT right there is bullshit. Accept it or not, people are sinful by nature. However, I think that God is in control of the world and that through seeking him and rejecting ourselves, we can slowly and surely find repair in his hands.

I close with a line from a song by the band Project 86 called Misfit Toys.
"We're all broken, Like misfit toys.
We rest in pieces begging for You to make us one."

A side note

One surefire way for me to either ignore, dislike, or criticize something you say is for you to add "-y poo" to what you've said. Be it a name (Matty poo, Paigey poo, etc) or something else, I'll more than likely regard you or at least what you've said as stupid and/or annoying.

Momentous? Nah.

I should be studying for my History of Ideas exam but instead, I wanted to write a poem/song/lyric/collectionofthoughts. It's not much but it's an idea that I've been thinking about tonight. The idea is how as humans we often seem to look at God as if he owes us something, like we give purpose to a meaningless life or something. I don't know about others but I know I'm horribly and despicably vain 90% of the time and these thoughts about God are evidence of that.

Anyway, I have to try and study, so here is my work in progress:

Knuckles Grow Pale

Drip the hot water so the pipes won’t freeze.
Beg for mercy; reach up from your knees.
Return to the cycle of hatred and begging.
God is merciful,
Even though he doesn’t have to be.

Search for your treasure; there find your heart.
You’ll never know warmth if you won’t nurture a spark.
Run farther away and embrace your prodigal life.
God is forgiving,
Even though he doesn’t have to be.

Build up your walls with adobe and fear.
Give strength to your doubts and your distrust here.
Let your knees shake and your knuckles grow pale.
God is faithful,
Even though he doesn’t have to be.

The emergence of older people on Facebook

When my mom checked with me to make sure it was okay that she got on Facebook and that I wouldn't be embarrassed, I said it was okay and I even accepted her friend request. Now, my mom has been fine on Facebook. She doesn't like my statuses or clog up my wall or anything like that. However, over the past few months I've noticed many people her age, as well as younger and older, being quite active on Facebook. Normally I'm apathetic about it, but it does tend to get slightly annoying when people I hardly know like to comment on and *like* statuses, pictures, and all other things I post. I think I sort of understand what college students felt like when Marky Mark Zuckerburg opened the floodgates of Facebook to non-college students.

Don't even get me started on all those 7-8 year olds who have Facebook. Ugh.

Soy un perdedor

I'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me?

Distractions are nice at times. They're nice when you screw yourself up emotionally and are going through all kinds of crap that you've brought upon yourself and then you go and spend a day watching football with the guys. Even when I'm an idiot about a lot of things, God still blesses me with friendships and good times.

Overthinking

Over the past 24 hours, I have over thought a particular issue more than I've ever over thought anything. But now, there is a little more clarity and I'm just going to try and relax, enjoy this years Office Christmas episode, and maybe watch a movie later.

You give and take away

Blessed be your name
In the land that is plentiful
Where the streams of abundance flow
Blessed be your name

Blessed be your name
When I'm found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
Blessed be your name

Every blessing you pour out,
I turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say...

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be your glorious name

Blessed be your name
When the sun's shining down on me
When the world's all as it should be
Blessed be your name

Blessed be your name
On the road marked with suffering
Though there's pain in the offering
Blessed be your name

Every blessing you pour out,
I turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
Still I will say...

Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord
Blessed be your glorious name

You give and take away
You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
Lord, Blessed be your name

An interesting quote

I just bought a movie called High Fidelity for $1 at Goodwill and the first lines are as follows:

"What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?"

More Great Divorce quotes!

In an effort to try and jog some thoughts to add to my paper, I'm gonna post a couple more of my favorite passages/quotes from CS Lewis' The Great Divorce:

(From when the travelers in the bus are getting close to Heaven after embarking from Hell): "They were all fixed faces, full not of possibilities but of impossibilities, some gaunt, some bloated, some glaring with idiotic ferocity, some drowned beyond recovery in dreams; but all, in one way or another, distorted and faded. One had a feeling that they might fall to pieces at any moment if the light grew much stronger. Then--there was a mirror on the end of the wall of the bus--I caught sight of my own.
And still the light grew."

"One gets glimpses, even in our country, of that which is ageless--heavy thought in the face of an infant, and frolic childhood in that of a very old man."

"'Milton was right,' said my Teacher. 'The choice of every lost soul can be expressed in the words "Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven." There is always something they insist on keeping, even at the price of misery. There is always something they prefer to joy--that is, to reality.'"

"There have been men before now who got so interested in proving the existence of God that they came to care nothing for God Himself… as if the good Lord had nothing to do but exist! There have been some who were so occupied in spreading Christianity that they never gave a thought to Christ. Man! Ye see it in smaller matters. Did ye never know a lover of books that with all his first editions and signed copies had lost the power to read them? Or an organizer of charities that had lost all love for the poor? It is the subtlest of all the snares.”

"Human beings can't make one another really happy for very long. ...You cannot love a fellow-creature fully till you love God."

"There’s something in natural affection which will lead it on to eternal love more easily than natural appetite could be led on.  But there’s also something it it which makes it easier to stop at the natural level and mistake it for the heavenly.  Brass is mistaken for gold more easily than clay is.  And if it finally refuses conversion its corruption will be worse than the corruption of what ye call the lower passions.  It is a stronger angel, and therefore, when it falls, a fiercer devil."

Love?

I am finding that this paper on free will in CS Lewis' The Great Divorce is a lot tougher than I imagined, so I am going to take a short blog-posting-break before I take the rest of the night off to watch Passion of the Christ.
There's a scene in the Great Divorce where the narrator observes a saintly angel woman talking to a man who is seperated into two forms. One form is a tragedian (actor) and the other is a dwarf. The dwarf controls the other by a chain around his neck. Anyway, the two people talk and the woman tells the man, who was her husband back when she was alive, that she is sorry for not truly loving him back on earth. He asks what she means and this is what she says: "There was a little real love in it. But what we called love down there was mostly the craving to be loved. In the main I loved you for my own sake, because I needed you."
I'm pretty close to a situation where one person thinks they love another person and this sums that up to a T. Really, I think this sums up most love on earth up, we are all very selfish, very self-seeking.

"Daughter" by As Cities Burn

This song really impacted me this morning and I feel like I ought to share it. As Cities Burn is one of my favorite bands, mainly because they are passionate in their music and their lyrics are very challenging and thought-provoking.

It's a shame what I thought of her
when I saw her that way.
It didn't change what you thought of her.
She's been your daughter since she was made.

Since I was made, I've been leaving.
I'd say I'd change but I wouldn't believe it.
It's 'cause my legs, they don't forget.
When they find a way out, they'll always take it.

Oooh we don't
Nooh we don't
we don't know how we got here,
the way is overgrown.
Oooh we don't
Nooh we don't
we don't know how we became this.

She has a name but I don't have to know
'cause all I'm after is all she has to show.
We cannot save, we can't even slow
our loss of innocence every new child has to grow.

Oooh we don't
Nooh we don't
we don't know how we got here,
the way is overgrown.
Oooh we don't
Nooh we don't
we don't know how we became this.
