This is a phrase that has been on my mind a lot lately, mainly due to a couple relationships I have with people that resemble past relationships. But this post is about a paragraph from a guy named Alvar Nunez Cabeza De Vaca, a Spanish explorer who spent time with multiple groups of Native Americans in the 1400/1500s. I have to read his account of an expedition for American Lit and came across this:
"It is common among them [a group of Indians he was with] all to leave their wives when there is disagreement, and directly reconnect with whomever they please. This is the course of men who are childless. Those who have children never abandon their wives."
Wow, this really reminds me of how marriage and divorce are in America right now, some 500 or or so years later. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
